About Ben Jeffery
Born in 1986 and raised in Barnet, North London, Ben’s passion for art began at a young age when his grandfather introduced him to the work of John Varley, a renowned 18th-century watercolour artist, who was related to the Jeffery family. Ben’s love for portraiture grew during secondary school, where friendly drawing competitions among classmates sparked his desire to pursue art professionally. His portrait of his father, created for a mock GCSE, was admired by his peers and solidified his decision to become an artist.
Although Ben’s technique is primarily self-taught, he went on to study art at both college and university. He was often left to develop his own methods, and this freedom allowed him to explore oil painting and create colorful, detailed works that stood out. His approach to painting is intuitive, evolving with each brushstroke—starting with a basic composition and allowing the shapes, colors, and details to emerge organically.
Ben works in two stages: first, painting the entire canvas in base colors, then adding more detail after it has dried. He often steps away from his paintings for a day or two before reviewing them, allowing him to notice areas that need adjustment.
His work is diverse, spanning from dynamic portraits to landscapes, and he is particularly drawn to vivid colors that bring a modern flair to his pieces. A self-proclaimed sci-fi movie fan, Ben is inspired by special effects and concept art, as well as the stunning natural views around his family’s properties in Herefordshire and the Isle of Harris.
Though he once considered pursuing a career as a concept artist for films and video games, Ben always returns to the depth and richness of oil painting, which remains his preferred medium. His work continues to inspire collectors worldwide, blending vibrant color palettes with a dynamic, contemporary approach to portraiture and beyond.
