Bob Dylan is one of the most influential musicians of the past century, with his music being internationally recognised, however his artistic vision transcends beyond just the stage. Just as Bob drew on traditional folk and blues in his music, his painting have taken the same inspiration from classic American imagery, including diners, railroads and motels.
Bob Dylan uses art to express himself, as well as a way of simply filling the time when on tour and in-between creating music. He will often sketches his artwork and then brings it to life with the use of acrylics and watercolours. Bob’s artwork first came into the public light in the 1970’s when it made an appearance on his album sleeves, however, this artwork got major internationally recognition when in 2006 he was approached by a German art gallery to exhibit his artwork.
Since the interest in his work in 2006 Bob was inspired to revisit his art which provoked the creation of 320 new pieces which are now known today as The Drawn Blank Series. Bob has continued to add to his art repertoire with many of this collections being exhibited in internationally recognised galleries such as the Halcyon Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and the Gagosian Gallery.
When Bob Dylan’s artwork originally went on sale to the public in 2008 it sold out, with an average limited edition print selling for between £1500 and £5000. On top of this, the secondary market for people reselling Bob Dylan’s prints and artwork remain very scarce. Very few people go on to sell their Bob Dylan art and very few pieces for the early prints are available to purchase from art galleries, including Westover Gallery.
However, Bob Dylan is still actively producing and selling his art which means the price is likely to increase massively at the moment, although, most of his art does sell out pretty quickly and when you take into consideration his age, it may be that he stops producing art as frequently in the coming years making his artwork more valuable.
