Inspired by Caroll’s imperious Queen of Hearts and her guards, the humanoid playing cards, Kristjana has turned the joyful ‘heart’ and hardworking 'club' into trees. Spot tiny motifs of Alice’s world within the laden boughs; leggy flamingos leave their game of croquet to scale the branches, the ever ticking clocks and depictions of afternoon tea. The giant caterpillar suggests imminent transformation and the magic-inducing mushrooms invoke a sense of the unfamiliar and surreal. One brightly hued bird is metamorphosed into the Mad Hatter, another into the boundlessly energetic March Hare. The genial Cheshire Cat watches over walking playing cards, which falter along blindly in this world where things are seldom what they seem…
