Peter Smith is a contemporary British Artist from Mansfield who is self-taught. Peter originally trained as an architect and worked in design for some of the largest companies around, including Disney, Fox, Pixar and Marvel. Smith got his major break when in 2005 he contributed to a piece of artwork for the BBC’s Children in Need and become professional, teaming up with Washington Green Fine Art Publishing. Smith gets inspiration from artists such as Salvador Dali and Will Bullas, whose surreal characters and sense of humour bring life to their creations.
Since first establishing himself, Peter has collaborated with his wife, Jayne, to create Lost Impossimals™, Lost Alice™ and Impossimals® series. The pair have created the perfect studio at their home where they create their eccentric art, including Victorian dining room and two foot teapot. The couple create the scenes for their oil-on-board paintings, which can involve anything from installing a mini railway line to baking dozens of jam scones, before interpreting them on the canvas.
Smith is most known for his striped rotund creature that has the form of a hippopotamus but the stripes of a zebra, referred to as ‘Zeppos’ or ‘Impossimals’.
“My aim has always been to make people happy. I simply take a gentle childhood and combine it with what makes me smile.” - Peter Smith
Peter Smith’s Impossimals have proved to be a huge success around the world, with himself and wife Jayne taking part in a number of exciting projects, including creating a life-sized baby elephant Impossiphant for the Elephant Family Charity. The couple are also currently working with a Los Angeles based entertainment company to create an Impossimals animation series.
Peter and his wife have recently released a new collection of artwork featuring their favourite characters, the Impossimals®. The newly realised collection, Sotally Tober, offers a range of cocktail and booze themed paintings. “We originally set out to create a sensible collection. But it turned into a party that got rather wild. Brushes were cast aside, along with art-related clothing. Six months passed in a blur, and we both staggered out of the studio nursing a hangover that could knock out a whale.” - Peter Smith
