The title of this piece was inspired by Joey Ramone from the American punk band, the Ramones. The musician once said to Alex that being at the beach and immersed in nature was: “The Church of the Blue Sky.

“This then became code whenever we were at the beach or just feeling at one with the universe,” Alex explains. “When I painted these two pieces and hung them on my wall, ‘Cathedral of Sea and Sky’ was the very first title that came to my head.”

While creating these artworks, Alex listened to a wide range of music by bands including the Ramones and Beastie Boys. These in turn inspired his work.

He adds: “Stripes are an iconic, graphic machine in our consciousness and in the world of art. When I was seven years old, The Beach Boys all wore striped shirts, and I desperately wanted one too! The stripe is natural and automatic; it appeals to us all at some instinctual level.”Hand Embellished Boxed Canvas
